A Small Doc Emrick Tribute

22 Jul

For you hockey fans out there, I just wanted to take a moment to recognize the greatness that is Doc Emrick.  If you’re a Devils fan like myself (and I know you are), you were probably saddened (crushed, actually) to hear today that Doc stepped down as the Devils play-by-play man after 21 glorious seasons.

I’ve had numerous arguments over the years on the subject with other sports fans, but to me there really is no question that Doc is as good as it gets in the world of sports broadcasting.  He’s not going away entirely, as he has decided to move to NBC/Versus full time, so you’ll still be able to hear his excellence a couple times a week and into the Stanley Cup playoffs, but I think it’s safe to say that us Devils fans will be missing out.  We’ve been spoiled to have him call games for our Mickey Mouse franchise (ahem, Wayne Gretzky) for over two decades, and it is fair to say that Devils games simply won’t be the same.  For those of you who aren’t familiar, or still want to argue about where he might stand in the PBP landscape, check out the first 30 seconds or so of the above video for a little taste.
